This was classified as Erste Lage (1er Cru) since 2017 vintage. When we first tasted this new vineyard (Dönnhoff purchased it about 10 years ago), we were bowled over. The soil is is different from the rest of their vineyards. It's red sandstone. This gives the wine a hint of spicy character, balanced (meaning friendly to Riesling newbies) minerality and tend to have a good fruit-acid balance every vintage.
