If you have tasted the Il Pettirosso by Arpepe, you will surely buy this without hesitation. Arpepe is widely acknowledged as the top producer in Valtellina, a region in NW Italy that grows Nebbiolo grape (same as those used in Barolo and Barbaresco). This is a beautiful region where vineyards are at 400 to 500m altitude and facing south so perfect for the long hangtime/slow ripening to achieve maximum flavours and aromas in the grape.
The rendition of Nebbiolo in Valtellina is more elegant under the hands of Arpepe. Their tannins tend to be not as dry as in Barolo or Barbaresco.
Sassella is one level up from Il Pettirosso. Vines here are about 50 to 100 years old! And this wine was aged 24 months in the bottle before release. Only about 3750 cases produced annually compared to say 20,000 cases of Lafite Rothschild! Superb value if you think about it.
