If you are looking at this, you probably know it's something special. This Edition 164's base vintage is 2008 (great vintage). Extremely limited (and hard to find now) and definitely a collector's item!
This is the 164th creation of Krug Grande Cuvée and the second release to display the Edition on the label. Based on 2008, it is a blend of 127 wines from eleven vintages: the oldest being 1990 and the youngest 2008.
Exceptional freshness in the mouth is accompanied by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat and jellied fruit. Rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit are enhanced by the subtlety of the fine and elegant bubbles. This has tremendous power of fruit, brioche, backed apples, vanilla and spice and a length of flavour that goes on and on. The precision of recent releases is unprecedented and just how many decades they might hold in the cellar is anyone’s guess! THE ultimate non-vintage.
'Krug Grande Cuvee 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring. 2027 – 2047' AG- 97 points
