Les Amoureuses, despite being a 1er Cu, commands Grand Cru prices. Without a doubt 2nd in quality to Musigny Grand Cru in Chambolle Musigny. Prices are high because the vineyard is only about 4+ hectares shared between many producers. So each makes a tiny amount. In fact sometimes, Les Amoureuses from certain producers can be higher than Bonnes Mares Grand Cru. This is the case for Robert Groffier!
Revered and legendary vineyard + great vintage (2019) + famous producer = hard to go wrong
'The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is aged in 25% new oak with 50% whole bunches. This Amoureuses is quite arresting on the nose with intense black cherries, violet, sous-bois and graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with muscular tannins and good grip with an overtly saline finish. You can feel the shucked oyster shells in this wine and it has a tremendously long aftertaste. Excellent.' (Neal Martin 95 - 97 pts) Vinous Dec 2020.
And now notes by the famous Burg guru Jasper Morris MW:
'50% whole bunch, 20% new wood, 60 year old vines. Impressively rich deep purple. The Amoureuses has a sumptuous character that the Bonnes Mares eschews. Even some chocolate notes, but it is by no means over-ripe, and certainly the fresh acidity keeps the tension going at the back. Exciting and with good persistence. Tasted: November 2020.'
