This is a very small region and relatively unknown to general Italian wine consumers unless they are wine geeks! Valtellina is in the north of Italy bordering Switzerland. If you are skiing or hiking in St. Moritz, just cross the border into Italy. In 1.5 hours, you will be in Valtellina.

One takeway that you must know about Valtellina is that the grape variety used here is 100% Chiavennasca (a.k.a. Nebbiolo that you know in Barolo and Barbaresco)!

Less than 1,000 cases of this wine were made! That's bloody small quantity so if you want to drink something rare..this is another plus point.

Medium garnet in colour. Medium + intensity ripe red cherries and raspberries on the nose. Medium bodied, medium+ tannins (considered soft and ripe which is welcoming for Nebbiolo!) medium + acidity, dried herbs and dried red fruits (raspberries, cherries), blackberries and hint of salinity on the palate. Medium + finish of soft and charming fruits. A comfy and heart warming wine. Highly recommended for Italian wine lovers if you haven't discovered Valtellina. By the way Arpepe is probably the TOP producer in the region!

Valtellina is a beautiful region at the foothills of the Alps at the Swiss and Italian border

Beautiful Valtellina region!
